When he is studying at the National School of Photography of Arles, Mathieu Pernot begins a photographic project with gypsy families who live in the area, and enrols in a documentary and ethnographic tradition of the medium. The verticality of the images, the neutrality of the expression and the distance established with the subjects exclude all form of exoticism, while still questioning our perception of that community.
